Digital Smile Design (DSD) is coming to Estonia

Kliinik 32 is the first clinic in Estonia to officially implement Digital Smile Design (DSD). It allows patients to take a more active role in creating their treatment plan.

According to Kliinik 32 prosthodontist Dr Martin Martma, the main advantage of Digital Smile Design is that the patient can see the possible treatment outcome before the treatment begins. This makes the treatment plan clearer for the patient and shows which procedures are required to achieve the desired result.

“Using photographs, video, X-rays and digital intraoral scanning, a comprehensive image of the patient’s face is created – the so-called ‘digital patient’ – which makes it possible to visualise both the current state of the patient’s smile and the potential final treatment result in a very realistic way,” explains Dr Martma.

With the help of the new technology, the results of tooth replacement and repositioning can be seen even before treatment procedures begin. “The doctor can show the patient exactly where implants are to be put and what the new positions of the teeth might be to achieve the desired outcome. Or, for example, if the gum contour needs to be changed, comparing the final design with the current situation clearly shows the patient in which area this needs to be done. Based on what they see, the patient can tell the doctor whether the smile design suits them and, if necessary, suggest changes,” says Dr Martma.

Time spent in the dental chair is costly for the patient, and the opportunity to see the aesthetic final result before work even begins helps to save this valuable time. When orthodontic and implantology specialists work as a team, relying on a single treatment plan and final design, it becomes possible to achieve exactly the result the dental clinic has promised the patient.
